The Comedy of Self-Deception

How We Sweet Talk Ourselves Out of Doing Anything

Human beings have two talents: overthinking and lying to ourselves.

The most seductive lie in the history of language: “I’ll wake up early tomorrow and get it done.”

And bound by the physics of the universe—tomorrow comes.

It’s 8:06 AM and the first of 7 alarms starts ringing. Last night’s bedtime fairytale is supposed to be today’s plan. The version of me who set the infinite alarms? A delusional optimist who believes in beautiful lies.

Naturally, in the back of our minds we know deep down that we have to get up early, that we must be productive. After all, the sacred obligation of adulthood is productivity. But there’s a temptation that we also love to flirt with—the snooze button.

There is a primal nudge, a whisper of responsibility, urging us to get out of bed. But the snooze button is too friendly. Dangerously flexible.

And on this particular day, we reject that nudge with unearned confidence.

Must we get up and do things? Yes.

Must we do them today? Let’s not rush to conclusions.

Instead, we suppress the urge, and we keep snoozing. We don’t have trouble getting up. We have trouble separating from our beds—the cozy embrace of covers and pillows too strong to reject. In the meantime, we tell ourselves more lies—this time, we remix the mantra, “It’s okay. I’ll do it on my day off.”

And like clockwork, the day off comes—it always does!

And we, naturally, become a volunteer version of a bum on those days. No alarms. No timeliness. No hygiene. No human decency.

We marinate in the comfort of our own filth.

We don’t get to do this enough. The day off part, and the bummy-no-shower part as well.

And so we continue with more seductive lies.

Like the time our hearts desired a purchase that our wallets couldn’t afford. In fact, we couldn’t even afford to look at it—let alone buy it.

In all honesty, we were 3 tax brackets away from being in the vicinity of the store. But our eyes were bigger than our budget and now our bank accounts are smaller than our dreams.

Stay snoozing and stay spending—because what’s life without a little deception?

We bury ourselves so deep in our lies,

they become a bomb shelter.

Protecting us from everything.

Even the truth.
