The Struggles of Going to Sleep

Humor | 3 minute read

June 14, 2024

You’re exhausted, done with the world, and desperate to sleep—but your brain has other plans.

It is one of those days. You know, the one where there seems to be no ending in sight. The day feels like a custom order of hell courtesy of the devil. It feels as though you’ve walked on gravel in the middle of summer with no shoes on. As though you did the ice bucket challenge, except it was only pepper spray dowsing your entire body. As though baseball lost all bases, yet the shots keep slinging your way. But like all good things, your day, too, comes to an end.

Night befalls you; you're physically exhausted, mentally drained, emotionally all cried out, psychologically messed up, physiologically done with the world and internally Just want to go to sleep for good.

So you get to bed. You’ve already done your 300-step Korean skincare routine. You’ve flossed your teeth till you gagged on your own hand. You’ve brushed your teeth so aggressively you made yourself bleed. You’ve brushed your hair so hard you added permanent static to your scalp. And now, well now you’re ready to sleep.

But your mind has other plans.

Your mind wants to solve world problems. No matter how much you beg, no matter how much you plead. Your mind is active and is racing 1000 miles an hour.

So you toss and you turn. You close your eyes even harder, but nothing. You try reading that stodgy book, rather you now find it interesting. You try to mindlessly scroll through social media and find yourself getting even more wired up. You make yourself some hot tea, you meditate, you clear your mind and still nothing.

Sleep seems the farthest and furthest thing away from you right now. So you go back to tossing and turning in bed; magically sleep doesn’t even visit you by mistake. Instead you allow your mind to wander off as far as you would let it. You catch yourself thinking about that good looking human you laid eyes on five years ago at a gas station. You are genuinely wondering how they are doing right now. Unlike you, they’re probably asleep.

And still, sleep is far away from you.

So you decide to watch some show on Netflix and you binge the first five seasons just because you can. And still nothing. What is sleep, you start to wonder. It is an abnormal phenomenon unknown to your existence right now.

Though unluckily, before you know it, the sun is out and all hope in humanity has evaporated. So you give it another try, you attempt to sleep and just as you’re dozing off, your alarm goes off, blaring loud sirens. And just like that, counting off one more night of struggling to go to sleep.
